KING TO MAKE BID FOR PENRY’S SEAT Filed Under: Colorado Elections Topics: Steve King
August 3, 2009
State Rep. Steve King, a Republican, announced this morning he will run for the state Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, who is running for governor.
New oil and gas regulations and falling energy prices have taken a toll on the Western Slope, where King’s district is located. If elected, King says his number one goal will be job creation and revitalizing the economy on the Western Slope. “A healthy, robust economy does not have to come at the expense of our environment,” he said.
King was also among one of the first local officials to come out in opposition to a proposal to store hazardous mercury waste in his hometown of Grand Junction. First elected to serve House District 54 in 2006, King spent 18 years working with the Grand Junction Police Department and 8 years with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.
Thus far, no Democrats have announced a run for Penry’s Senate District 7 seat.
